The J-Mac Ferry is unusually
busy today carrying cars, trucks and Airstream trailers
across Steamboat Slough to Ryer Island. Although
Ryer Island is mainly comprised
of farmland, many
of us are on our way to Snug
Harbor Resort, a beautiful little RV
Park and
Marina tucked away in the heart of the California
Delta. Voted “Best Small
Park” in 2001 by
the California Travel Parks Association was a well
deserved award
for its hard working owner, Nicky Suard. |

Surrounded by 1,000 miles
of navigable waterways this is the perfect place
to be if you
| love to fish, water ski, swim or just
drift with the tide relaxing in your boat or one
of
the
many rental boats available here. |
| |
The California Delta offers
many other attractions as well. Some of the
historic towns
which encompass the area have buildings
standing which date back to the mid 1800’s.
A variety of restaurants, shops, museums, wineries
and local attractions make this a
great place for
family vacations or just a quiet weekend get away. |

It’s a quiet spring time
day here at Snug Harbor Resort. The weather
is mild and the sky
is filled with white fluffy
clouds on a background of deep blue. The absolute
silence here
is broken by the honking and squawking
of hundreds of migrating geese as they fly over
head
in almost perfect geometric patterns. I can
hear the sounds of a noisy woodpecker
doing damage
to a nearby tree, and the “putt putting” of a small
boat slowly making it’s
way up the still waters
of Steamboat Slough. |
| |
The park is coming alive
now and you can hear the hum of RV’s coming and
going, people
laughing and children playing.
The park is dotted with what looks like gigantic
silver
gumdrops.
The
Vintage
Airstream Club has come
here for their
annual Spring Rally. |
| |
What began in the winter
of 1952, with a small caravan of Airstream trailers
to Central
America, led by Wally Byam, Airstreams
inventor and founder, has become the international
“Wally Byam Caravan Club”. The WBCC boasts a membership
in excess of 18,000 today.
An appendage of that club
is the Vintage Airstream Club. Any Airstream trailer
greater than
25 years of age is considered “vintage”.
Most of the members have purchased these trailers
and completed restored them to their original condition.
This restoration for most is a project
that can
take up to 2 or 3 years to complete. Members in
the Western Region of the U.S. began
their rallies
4 years ago and have continued to have both a spring
and fall rally each year since
then.
All rallies
are spent at different areas each time they meet.
