Author Carol Ray and husband Bill

Over the past two years we have received hundreds of letters from new or someday to be RVers.  Wonderful comments and personal information from people who read "Your Home On Wheels".  I do wish now that I had kept these letters to share with you, but, alas, I didn't.  I will from now on.

ear Carol,

I'm half way through your book and I have already told my husband, "I love this woman!"

Your book is full of all the important things we need to know, as we will be retiring next year, and want to do what you and Bill are doing. Not full-time, however. I have to keep my house and all that "stuff."

When I saw the lace curtains, and read about the pretty throw rugs and velcro'd pictures, I just knew I could be happy in our home away from home. (We have a Victorian decorated home and I sure would miss my lace, roses, and frills.)

So...thank you, thank you, thank you for writing this book. (My husband was up at 3 am and read it in one sitting. It helped him with lots of details he needs to know, too.)

You will be hearing from us again.

5-8-04 Carol,

Just wanted to say thanks for your book, "Your Home On Wheels."  For someone who is new to "the biz" it is a God-send.  And I know what I'm talking about in that department, because I'm a minister! Anyway, I'm just getting started and am going to be going with the CARE-A-Vanners group with Habitat for Humanity.  It has been a passion of mine for a long time and your book made me say, "Hey, I can do that!" Although I'll be travelling by myself, I now know I won't really be by myself at all.  I'm excited to get to know new people as I go.  Maybe our paths will even cross!

Oh yes, a large AMEN to the difficulty of finding your way around New England! I grew up in Oregon and moved to New England in 1984.  I still get turned around! I don't think they know what road and street signs are for.  But, as a native once told me:  "If you don't know where you're going, you shouldn't be trying to go there." Of course, they were kidding (I think.)  Besides, with the ocean "on the wrong side" I keep getting north and south mixed up! But, it is a beautiful part of the country - even in the winter.  Although, now I plan to enjoy that view from Arizona!

Thanks again,

We ended up meeting the folks that wrote this letter and had a lovely dinner together at the Freeport Bar and Grill in Freeport California.  We sure wish all the best to Dick & Judy Waters!

Carol:

Can't tell you how much we are appreciating your wonderful book!  Dog-earred and paste-it-notes and all!  We are truly beginners at RVing, and since we made this decision 1 1/2 months ago we have acquired hundreds (it seems) of books, magazines and peoples opinions on every aspect of this venture.  Your publication has become our bible!  We thank the internet every day for finding you and have passed the word to all who express a desire to hit the road.  We currently live in Sacramento, California, have purchased a used 2000 Alpha Ideal, which we call "The Ark",  34 feet of comfort, have ordered our 2004 Dodge 3500 pickup, sold our home and are chomping at the bit to hit the road.  Fortunately the new owners of our home are not pushing us out until we take possession of our pickup.  We are planning on sticking around this area for a while to practice driving and parking (at Cal Expo  RV Park and parking lot).  Last week we took a ride down the Delta of which you speak in your book.
This was the day before I first read about your stay in that area when you visited your son.  Would love to know where you set down if you care to share the info.  We were looking at a park called "Snug Harbor" for a short stay before we begin our real journey.  Wondering if that may be where you enjoyed your visit.

Again, thank you so much for being there for us and we hope to stay up-to-date and in touch with you on the internet.

Very Sincerely

Judy and Dick Waters

Here is an interesting letter from a man who just finished his first trip out. He read the book, wrote to us and we actually had an opportunity to meet him. (portions of letter printed only)

Dear Carol,

First off, I like your new web site very much, and I sure hope it will cause a lot of folks to buy your book. Your book sure helped me a lot prior to leaving on my trip, and after I had typed up and printed a reminder list to put right by my door that saved me a lot of "Oh My Goshes". I went over the check list every time I was ready to leave a camp site, and it sure saved me from doing something super stupid.

I might suggest that a BIG hint for newcomers to RVing should be BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU DROP IN THE COMMODE !!!! I made one (what I thought) small mistake, and dropped a handiwipe into the commode, I had just cleaned my hands with it, and did not think it important. How wrong I was ! In Needles I was dumping my black water and it did not flush out. My unimportant Handiwipe had plugged up the system and a neighbor and I spent an hour clearing the problem. Those chemicals do not liquefy the material a Handiwipe is made of.

I was a full month away from home and had such a good time that I'm ready to go again. My little home on wheels served me well, and I was like a bug in a rug and at peace with the world. One thing I found to be common wherever I camped, the folks I met were all GRADE A, and I sure made a bunch of friends. I do want to recommend the place I stayed the longest "Picacho Peak RV Resort", which is right on Highway 10 ,just 42 miles west of Tucson. .They featured a super good breakfast for $3, and an excellent dinner for $6, so I did not always cook for myself. There were pool, and dart tournaments besides card games, and dinner dances. There was a very nice pool area and Jacuzzi, and there were horseshoe pits and shuffleboard. All that plus the fact that there were lots of walks in spectacular scenery surrounded by magnificent Saguaros and Chollas. I even participated in a civil war reenactment of "The Battle of Picacho Peak" which was the western most battle of the civil war. Sure can't say I was bored.

All the best, and hope to hear from you again soon. Say hi to your husband, and give that  bundle of joy you call a dog a good back scratch.

Thanks for the useful information Bob.

Dear Carol:
I just finished reading your Book and really enjoyed it. It told
me just about everything a Camper should know. Thanks.

I'm just a part-timer. I'm looking for an Old Winnebago Class A, 1970-1976,
22' or less in Good Shape. There has to be One Somewhere. Any more
Suggestions that I should look for when purchasing one? It would be from
a private owner or car look. What precautions should I take? I saw a nice
one in Hilton Head, S.C. A 1973 with 51,000 miles. Motor: 318 cu in. Would
that Motor be Big Enough? Especially to tow a vehicle? That Motorhome had
everything, but I'm not sure if all worked?

Any suggestions you could give me would be Greatly Appreciated. Again,
Great Book. Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,

Patrick Kirby

Hi Carol,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.  I'm enjoying your book a great deal.  First, I rapidly read every page. Now I am re-reading it much more carefully.

Your wonderful humor mixed in with the cautions, tips, and experiences is like reading a letter from a friend.

Your website has very useful information.  Days could be spend following the practical links that you have provided.

>Thank you so much for your book and your website.

May make the first long trip in the 5th wheel in June.  California is the destination.  It's possible that the Delta area will be included.

Thank you for your kind words, hope to meet you all in June.

Just read"Your Home on Wheels" great book.  We plan to full-time as soon as house is sold.  Have camped for 45 years so not really novices but having a hard time picking out a full-timers 5th wheel.  We know what floor plan we want but want to get a unit suited to full timing in stead of weekend use.  I realize you can't answer every e-mail you get but if you could let us know what brand and model of 5th wheel you have sure would appreciate it.

We hope to get something about 33-35 foot with 2-3 slides.  plan to pull with 1 ton Ford.

Main reason for message was to let you know how much I enjoyed your book it is the fourth "RV" book we have read since last August when we decided to make the move.  Thanks for all the tips you shared.

 Sincerely,
Christie Cleveland
